What does " Talk to you later" mean to you?

I literally understood it as the other person would call me later to talk to me right??????????? but Nooooooooooooo! its just a nice "bye bye" North American slang.. but why tell me talk to me later? I DONT GETIT!!!!
Definately room for cultural misunderstanding here :)

Guess the same goes with "How ya doing?"
Nobody really want to know what a shitty day you had and the instinctive answer is " Good good, and you?"

  • Girls,

Then don't forget the labeling Afrian American expression to say hi, "Yo man, what's up?"

  • Haha, a juicy language debate going on here. Just to put in my 2 cents' worth:

Real conversational data exhibit the rather disconcerting quality of often being largely content-free. ... Conversation is frequently about building or maintaining relationships rather than exchanging information.

(Michal Lewis, Implementing the Leical Approach)

I remember my Turkish friends being frustrated by their host father as he asked "Alright?" whenever they met in the house. They thought he was after the same piece of information over and over again while, clearly, he was just maintaining the relationship.

I also struggled with the odd 'Talk to you later' phrase when I first heard it from Andy, a Canadian trainee, here in Malaysia. But if you think it over, it makes perfect sense. It follows the same pattern as 'See you later'.

Using the language here doesn't come without acquiring a bit of the culture and relying on context rather than meaning.

In my experience, the usual answer you'd hear from a young Briton for 'How are you doing?' is 'Not too bad' - so I follow. It means nothing, obviously, but I maintain the relationship and if I feel like I can always pour my heart out lor.

    Anyway, language teacher here..

  • Brace yourself for more here.. I forgot to add one thing.

Women, in general, should feel more familiar using the language with this purpose, unconsciously though it may be. Some research suggest that girls at primary level of education use already twice as many words a day as boys who are usually content with imitating roaring lions.

  • yeah just wish that in order to maintain the relationship, we could go for something less confusing, what do u think of just a SMILE? :))) and no words...so no misleading anybody...

well beats imitating the roar of a lion :)

  • Research also suggests that to maintain some relationships you even have to use the whole of your body..
