Requiem for an egg-tart
Yes I can go without eating normal carbs for 1mth, but somehow it is just plain wrong to say NO to a cute, yellow, creamie, egg tart staring at you with those oh so adorable eyes. Did I say eyes?:) Plain and simple:You just can't say "No" to an egg tart.
So as I nibble onto the egg tart, decided to share with you the classic liners and lessons I have learnt from my 1 mth job hunting in Singa Singa Singapore, normally you have to pay me for entertaining or imparting wisdom ok. :D
Classic Lines:
1. Interviewer: So what is your ambition?
YY: To be Happy
Interviewer looks at me weirdly with raised eyebrows.
YY: Well its true...Oh ok you mean career ambition, not life long ambition alrite...yadayadayada
2. Interviewer: Basically I need someone to clean my sh*t. (in a candid tone )
Yes he did say that and he is currently the marketing director, brand manager for 3 brands
3. Interviewer: ok now before you leave the room, tell me in ONE sentence, why should we select you on top of the other candidates I have heard things like hardworking, perseverant etc. And decide that yes XXX are the one and call you back for the 2nd round and meet the regional director?
Lessons Learnt:
1. As the S- Guru says so correctly " Its a numbers game"
You have to send, send and send again to companies that you would like for, even they are not hiring now, companies that advertised and job agencies.
2. Revamp and Rewrite
Its a continueing process to revamp and rewrite your CV and cover letter over and over again, and it would be well worth the effort to actually study the company and write something intelligent before you send it over, and for it not to sound like a copy and paste thing that you do with every company.
3. Smile until it Hurts
Even though you are sick of going for interviews and "selling" yourself, you have to put on a BRIGHT smile and act that its your 1st. Smile, eye contact and dress to impress! Oh yeah the Makeup too, hate that part.
4. Network works
I could be a slow starter at this, however I can vouch that it is indeed very useful, it may not guarantee to get you the job but it will definately get you the interview and then its up to you.
Think I will have to be on this track for some more time to get my "dream job", so feel free to share with me your findings too if you would like. :)
And the egg tart stopped smiling.

hey ying...
some ideas that may help :) at least those that were shared with me by my hr colleagues:
1: Always think and answer to how you can add value to the company...not the other way round
E.g. yup you want to be happy is great but how can you work in the company, contribute and be happy is the link they want to see you think through
2: long term plans for you in the company: its good to be honest and say ya I want to take a masters in 1 year, i want to set up my own business...but in terms of company, where does this help them in making a choice? should they train you and you leave? my boss once told me there's something about telling the truth and truth well-told...
3:be well prepared, know all about the company, its recent news, the position you are applying for, and asking good questions can help you score points
4. take efforts to prepare for first 5 mins self-introduction as it is one of the most important parts where the interviewer may already make a decision based on it...don't say anything that doesn't adds value to you
5. beware of making "template" answers or fake your way through. it may work sometimes but doesn't escape thouse who have interviewed thousands....
6. final point: be careful of dressing and photographs sent, don't wear a shirt with IBM's logo when you are going for interview with Sony, neither take a picture holding a glass of wine when you are interviewing with beer company...:(
in the end, there is still lots of luck element but cutting down the risk element increases the chances...
good luck! ;)

Yingying my dear! It's almost a perfect post but why do you have to start and end it with comments on egg tarts and even a picture of it which is a completely unrelated note and so unattractive?! Why are eggs worth loving?
So my advice, be careful of bringing on topics about eggs in your interview because it's a high risk topic, if there're egg haters like me in the company that is.

Every interview is a new opportunity to explore more than just job opportunity. It's a window of getting to know each others.
All the best my friend...

Ying and Tee, the Andel Reunion invitations to both of you have been pulled out of the "Invited" drawer and now under reconsideration on the table. The final decision will be made based on your attitude over the course of the next 4 years, 9 months, 14 days, 11 hours, 33 minutes...
