A New Day in Old Sana'a

Beautiful movie, caught this film at the Singapore International Film Fest last week. It gave many pple their 1st insight into Yemen, its interesting architecture, women in black veils covered from head to toes. How it weaves cultural and traditional customs into the plot without ending up like a boring documentary is remarkable. Its one of those things that make you feel that there are lots about this world that you have yet to see/explore.

"A New Day in Old Sana’a, a quirky and fun love story, addresses the age-old conflict between tradition and modernity via a highly unusual plot. The film’s protagonist, Tariq, faces the biggest dilemma of his life when his fiancee’s wedding dress is stolen and he falls in love with the mysterious young woman who appears in it. His fiancée, meanwhile, turns to the local community to start a frantic search for the unidentified thief, resulting in a string of unexpected events. The story is set in the breathtaking ancient part of Sana’a in Yemen, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is the first feature film to come out of the country. Winner of Best Arab Film and nominated for the Best Director First Feature at the Cairo IFF 2005."
