Baby on the way

Not mine, but my boss to be:)

In the end i may not start work on tue as my to be boss is having a baby soon and he just called me that he doesnt know when when exactly the baby is due, but probably within the weekend or mon, but he will give me a call when he knows or rather when he becomes Dad, as he would be taking 3 days off work, so if baby comes on mon, he prefers me to come for work on thur, so he can be there to prepare me or welcome me at the office...its one of those times, that i am feeling so inexperienced in the social ways of life, like what else can i say but 'gosh u must be so excited' ' best of luck' to parents to be.

I cant hardly begin to understand what does it mean by being married, then having a kid, and awaiting in hrs, mins and secs for the arrival of your OWN kid, how unnerving is that!!!! and all i could say its best of luck?! ha..

One Month Anniversary back to Singapore

"Happy to be back?"Asked pple here from Singapore
"Have you moved on?"Asked pple from Sweden

The answer is hmmmm I am undecided, but it's my decision to come back so yes I am happy to be back.

Though when I was looking through the fantastic photos that I took when I was in Sweden or traveling to Gotland, Prague, Vienna and Greece, to contribute my share of nice photos to the main page of nomadlife, ahhhhh pls know that I missed you guys so much and love you all.

Today is my One month anniversary back home, think I have adjusted pretty well, though I am not too confident with roads and buses, but will definitely get that back, just thought I would finish with my list of interesting 'findings' that I have from my reintegration back to Singapore:

1) There were no household insects whatsoever in Sweden, probably it's too cold and there are in Singapore.

2) I am having SINUS in the morning and at night before I sleep, my nose is blocked, hattttteee that feeling and the funny thing was when I was in Sweden didn't have that problem at all, my friend who went London experienced the same thing, does it really have to do with humidity or wat?! Probably that's why the concept of tissue paper is more popular here.

3) I have taken the habit to bathe in the morning, which was not the case before, as most Asians bathe at the end of the day before they fall asleep so they will be clean in their clean beds. Well maybe I have to bathe twice then since I need the refreshing bath to wake up in the morning now too.

4) I like to HUG! Think it's a cool thing that I picked up in Sweden where you hug close friends when you meet and say goodbyes, when in Asia a handshake or a wave goodbye is the norm. And oh ya, I have acquired too the 'good manners' from Sweden of introducing myself to every single person of a gathering, even if it's a damn crowded room of strangers, when previously I would just shrink to my comfort group of close friends and be anti social I guess.

5) Subconsciously, I now check the weather report for Sweden as well when I read the local newspapers, I was the previous weather girl within our Elux Stlm community, reporting daily weather updates everyday ha even though it is not accurate.

6) I get totally impatient when waiting for buses and trains now, as in Sweden we are spoilt of being able to map out the exact timing of the public transportation to get from one place to another for example if I were to go from Stadshagen to Gullmarsplan I get a list of timings the trains will leave and the connecting buses as well. Now I just wait…for trains they do display how many minutes left but not for buses, though in all fairness its not long, it's the matter of knowing I guess. On the converse, actually I do know pple in Sweden who are actually more impatient when they know the bus is to come in 2mins, and when it doesn't, they get more pissed than they need be.

7) And to hear the trainees in Singapore saying 'Can?' 'Can la', attempt Singlish, is both amusing and hilarious. While I end my sentences with the infamous 'ya', nasty habit that I picked up from Rajat I think, and pretty infected the rest of our trainee gang back in Stlm.

Lastly, this would be my last week of freedom, as I have to earn my daily noodles/rice/bread starting from next Mon, working for Electrolux in Asia Pacific, here in Singapore, yes my 1st real job in the real world, lets see how it goes.

Ha det bra, good looking pple!

(English translation: Have it good)

PS: Its now a very very weird feeling to blog in your own cty, kinda too close for comfort if you know what i mean :P

On the Reading scene:

Read 2 cool books that I have wanting to read since my times in Stockholm. One of them is High Fidelity which I bought as a present for Dimitris, upon recommendation from Rajat the widely read Indian in our group and yet another is the Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy another recommendation, apparently all the Indians in AIESEC strongly recommend this book, so that's me catching up on my reading

I guess High Fidelity by Nick Hornby is funny for anyone has had past relationships, as its about this guy with a mid life crisis in his 30s, and decided to call up the list of his ex girlfriends, to know
whats his problem, why he cant be happy and find someone afterall guess its more of a guy book, but it does give you one of those "been there, done that" smiles and laughter during the reading. They made a movie out of the book starring Jon Cusack.

For the Hitchhiker guide's to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, there is supposed to be a trilogy, but I only read the 1st book. Its like a science fiction aka Star Wars kinda way but much more light hearted and really funny, many of a times, you go Huh? When it blows your imagination away with descriptions of an alien race like Zaphod Beeblebrox, a two headed, three armed, ex hippie, president of the galaxy etc. But my favourite part of the book is actually the introduction of Bablefish, it's a fish that you put into your ear, which translates thousands of language for you, cool eh, funny though when I was in Stockholm, my boss and colleagues were talking about it and there are actually website search engines named Bablefish. So if you want to know why a towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have, check this book out.

Anyone has other cool fiction or non fiction books to recommend, do tell me.

Reflections from my new shoes

I should have known, and i actually expected it, but i went ahead and bought them anyway. My new black shoes from Charles and Keith have just given the back of my ankles a new definition of pain and rather a new style of walking, on my toes.:P

Makes you think about all the predictable things in your life, be it a cute guy that you see, a new relationship, or even very yummmy food, that you may overeat...you could practically see the warning sign flashing all over it. But again, you think, it could be different this time, afterall its a new person or new food or new shoes, and you are different at different stage of your life, so it may work...you think? Should have known better?

Alas, youth gives us the strength to try anew everytime, makes me think sometimes that the popular quote "leaving no regrets" is overhyped.

Was sooo good to see Rajat again after our brief farewell at Elux in Sweden, he arrived in Singapore yday in the wee hours of 4.40am. He was actually meant to come on the weekend before, but due to visa issues yday was all he got. Krishna (his 2 time successor from AIESEC in India days, currently a trainee in DHL Sipo) and I then arranged to wake up real early and pick him up at the airport. Well another thing was I drove for the 1st time since I came back to SG in my dad's car, a big CITRON which I am not too comfy of driving of course. Anyways seems that Mr Maaker didnt have a gd flight either, as he only caught 20mins of sleep of the 6hr flight. Anyways we went for morning brunch at this 24hr Hong Kong cafe then dropped Krishna for work before heading to Chinatown for some tourisy things. Unfortunately it happened to rain like pouring rain 4 times yday, and most of the festivities and stalls are closed yday morning, pity pity. And haaaa my shopping bug seemed to either have rubbed off on Rajat or Singapore Sales are really THAT gd that he ended up buying lots of stuff as well. We went Boat Quay for chilli crab lunch with Krishna by the waters then with my slippers and pants drenched from the rain, of course we went to say Hi to pple in Electrolux in Singapore :P Rajat's ex boss from stlm has now been stationed in Singapore, so would like to meet him before he flies to Sydney for work. No doubt I feel pretty weird dressed so casually meeting my future would be colleagues and bosses ( crossing my fingers) since I have been to the office 2wice all decked out in suit and in black, and pls, I do look very gd in business clothes, ok enuff about me. In short both of us are tired and its gd cooling but rainy weather at the same time, so we are both taking it easy, otherwise as he said, we could have covered much more. Anyways heres wishing him all the best to his new life in Sydney and when he transits back here in Aug, I will be waiting.

AIESEC-y weekend

Finally returned to the gigantic hug of AIESEC, by throwing myself or rather being thrown into full blown activities:

Sat: Chaired AIESEC in Sipo MC elections for 0506, a whole new cool team is born, they are energetic and bubbly, all the best to their year. Then went for dinner with some aiesec alumnus and was about to join the bday party of our trainees when I had to attend to some unforeseen circumstances, otherwise it would be even more aiesecy I guess.

Sun: Had a welcome back Singapore dinner held in conjunction with a new german trainee, Sven coming to Singapore and with another Singaporean trainee who so coincidentally happens to be my schoolmate from St Nicks, just back from Kraft US as well, Jean. And to my surprise, Adrianna and Nicole were there in town too, so was one long aiesec dinner, containing members, trainees, and visitors. Needless to say its at Lau Pau Sat, the christening hawker centre for all our trainees.

Mon: Me and Krishna woke up at 4.30am today to welcome Mr Rajat Maaker to Singapore, and showed him as much Singapore stuffie as we could, as he only had transit for the day before he leaves for work in Sydney, was way cool to see him though all 3 of us suffer from serious lack of sleep, more stories on this when I download my photos.. But yes, time for a break.

Remember to, Lock your keypad

Forgot to lock the keypad of my mobile phone today, and ended up making 5 international smses with BLANK messages and around the same number to my close friend caroline. When Carol got them, she panicked, thinking I was in trouble or rather kidnapped and tried locating me via my mobile and calling my parents asking where I was. Its only until much later that we clarified things but awww so sweet, good to know that someone worries about you sometimes.Mucks!:)

Someone stop me :P

Its scary..but for the past 1+ weeks i am back i have bought 8 tops, a jeans, 2 pairs of shoes...not to count the 5 day spree in Shanghai....it would seem that i bought something every day...and i would blame it on the big sales happening around the isle and things are so much cheaper compared to stockholm, and god, taxis are so cheap here.....i am used to seeing things in hundreds, so when i see things, "what only 70 bucks! buy la, so cheap!" Needless to say when i was in Shanghai, money was spent like water.. I have to start counting in Singaporean dollars and cents soon i hope....:P

Apparently we have more MCPs in our trainees as well, would be cool to take a joint photo together. Again needless to say it was a very happy meal, look at the array of food on the table and you will know why.

Many of whom are not familiar with his works (including me), you just have to mention fat women or men then perhaps you may have a slight inkling of seeing many of his famous paintings or sculptures.

He is a famous Colombian artist, currently at 73 years, and he is holding his first exhibition in AP, in Singapore. His subjects are mainly nude women, with still life as well. What I like about his art, is how fleshy the bodies are either painted or made into sculptures. His views on women are of a nurturer and provider which are portrayed very well through his art. Anyways went around Singapores Esplanade and went to the Singapore Art Museum to get a look at his sculptures and paintings, which are way cool. Go to this site for more information about this master.

Interesting food of the month- Paper Steamboat

Paper Steamboat
Originally uploaded by ying22.
If some of you have no idea what is a steamboat, i am sure this latest discovery of Paper steamboat will baffle you even further.:)

Not sure whether this dining style exisits in other ctys, but a steamboat is something like a hotpot, where you have a whole pot of boiling soup cooked continously by a portable stove in front of you, normally shared by many pple, and you put meat and vegetables of your choice into it,when cooked you would scoop it up onto your bowl and devour it. The crux of successful steamboat is the soup base and the fresh meat and veg that are thrown in to make the yummy soup in the end.

Well me and my friends discovered this restaurant in town, called Mushroom Pot where they used this new technology of cooking food in waxed paper, imported from Japan. Its good yummy food, so another new discovery for food.

or whenever i feel that its time to have an entry, whether i am happy or sad.:) Guess the reflection of 04 for me, would be my whole traineeship experience in Sweden, and
somehow I dont feel ready to do a complete or total review yet , though i have the quarterly reviews and bits and pieces at hand. Probably when i am due to have a traineeship experience sharing
then i would start to work on the ppt with all the photos....bet that will be some heart wrenching moment.:) But without the total reflection, i have listed the following 3 resolutions for 2005 :

1) Career
2) Health
3) Thinking more about others
- Loved ones and Friends
- Society

For the aiesec academy trained readers, the goals, strategy, action and measurables will come later....

Have a Happy 2005 all, and do you know that its the year of the Chinese Zodiac, Rooster?
What a timely photo eh

Shanghai Countdown to 2005

Being back to a tropical weather for 5 days, i must be crazy to say yes to go to Shanghai with Ceci, where it is freaking winter and cold, much colder than Stockholm ever. Which is surprising.
Its the kind of wet cold, like when you put your clothes in the room, it ACTUALLY feels damp where you wear them, and it doesnt help where there isnt central heating in Shanghai...
But other than the weather, everything else was perfect! As Zoe used to put on her msn nick when she visited Taiwan on her cty visit, Eat, Eat, Exchange, its the same here with us
in Shanghai, its Eat Eat Sleep :), and we have photos to prove it, around 70% of our photos taken in Shanghai were of us eating or of food.haha, what to do, food is just
too yummy there!

All thanks to Miss Chung, Vanessa, an old school friend of Cecilia who hosted us at her apartment, became our ever funny tour guide and tough negotiater/survivor in the Shanghainese society,
this trip has taken on a special meaning for me. As Vanessa has worked in Shanghai for close to a year, she was able to fill us in on the thinking and lifestyle of the locals, rather than us just wandering
aimless in the extremely TALL, very modern and new skyscrapers and malls. Just another pt, is that both of us are truely impressed by what we saw in Shanghai, the development in this city alone
is enough to rival developed citys like Japan and New York. Everywhere you see, there are reflective, tall skyscrapers, with LCD screens, buses with TVs, metro with the cashcard system
and you can see how rich this city is by the amount of money thrown alone at Xmas decorations, its unbelievable. Pple you see are decked out in fashionable clothings and branded stuff too.
No kidding, you have to really go to this city to know what i am talking about, otherwise you would be as skeptical as i was before till i saw it for myself. As Aloke said when he visited China, this country is set to take over the world. There are 400 foreign companies being set up every month in Shanghai,,,and the development is not slowing down.

I keep wondering how do the Shanghainese adjust to such rapid development for the past 8 years or so, the city must be in continual construction of new buildings and infrastructure and how do their
needs and wants evolve correspondingly to the foreign influence ( fyi I see STARBUCKS everywhere, and there are malls according to ctys like HK mall and Singapore Raffles city as well) and cope with that.
As there are some parts of Shanghai that are not as developed and alike slumns and the pay that the locals are getting are pretty low according to the wants and needs of the young pple. Perhaps
preoccupied vwith the beautiful superficial layer of the city, it has neglected the development of its pple somewhat. Everyday when you go to the streets, you will definately hear loud shouting and arguements
happening, and this is what they call the characteristic of Shanghainese pple. Correct me if i am wrong, there just seems to be a general hunger to make money in everyone, that sometimes
it would involve over promising your customers, and there is a general reluctance of customer service pple to deliver to satisfaction even if they could. Guess education in this area take time, afterall
before the European cities became more civilised, their pple all enjoy a fair and equal standard of living, and less pple are left hungry.

Why does this trip have a special meaning to me?
Comparing Stockholm, Shanghai and Singapore, Singapore fits right in between, and I feel that the gap is not as big as i imagined, lifestyle and working environment in Singapore would suit me the best.
There are more lands and cultures and new ways of doing things in this world left to be explored.
And the inspiration i get from Vanessa from living in Shanghai, for being so positive and learning to adjust to the lifestyle of the locals even though its no easy task, its highly stressful i consider to
get argumental every single day :P.

So enough moping about missing sweden, time to look forward, though sweden will always have a special place in my heart.:)

"Room" Improvement

Guess i wanted my room to look like MY room as soon as possible and within 3 days of me being in Singapore, I launched into operation Eagle hehe, nah just bought a tub of paint and started painting 3 walls of my room, into brown, the idea was to make it as relaxing as the resort kind of feel thus the base would be brown and wood and rattan furniture, so guess wat, i went back to our ever friendly swedish furniture store, IKEA and bought myself a wardrobe to hang my clothes. And yesterday after digging through 4 cartons of clothes, i have successfully sorted out all my clothes ( pls note these clothes come a long way with me, all the way when i was 12 years i think). Fixed my zig zag smirrors yesterday courtesy of my dad and now, i have curtains , a plant and a display area left and i am done i think. Its a never ending story..... but u know what, i will have the best room ever :)
